Welcome to our service of Morning Worship. Antoine has chosen all the worship for this service, for which we'll be using song sheets etc. It will be followed by a Christening in the chancel area, while others stay on for…?
LIFE. Remember the David Lister Carol service (CS2) before Christmas? Tessa Oram & Julia Clapp are now willing to help fulfil a vision at St John's of planting a youth Church ('LIFE'). They will put on a LIFE event each month (3-4pm), and offer training for the hour beforehand. They're committing to a 6-month programme, at the end of which we take over responsibility. This is really exciting, and we start next Sunday. So…
Next Sunday we have Elkana with us, and he will be our preacher. Godwin & Nkeiruka will also be with us, and we'll have a Nigerian style Morning Worship service. We will then have buffet lunch in Church, followed by training for LIFE, and the LIFE youth event.
Elkana is my friend from Nigeria, who has been studying for a Masters Degree in Transportation, a subject which he teaches at the Institute of Transportation in Zaria. He is married to Esther, with 3 boys, and is a non-stipendiary minister (Anglican). He has visited St Johns a few times, but not now for a year. His last day in Birmingham will be 30/1, when he will be awarded his degree. He will then be staying on with us for up to two weeks before returning home.
Come Together. Our Wednesday a.m. meeting - 9.30 Holy Communion, Coffee, chat, etc.
Confirmation. As a follow on from Alpha, some of you have said you'd like to be confirmed this year. I can now confirm that the Confirmation service in E. Hull on June 21st will be at St Johns at 6.30 pm. The course we'll be following is an Emmaus course called 'Nurture' and is recommended as an 'after Alpha' course. If you'd like to join the group, but have already been confirmed that's not a problem. I gave out a draft programme last Sunday, but set out below an amended one, starting on March 4th @7.30pm.
What Christians believe
March 4 Believing in God
March 11 We need God in our lives
March 18 The life and ministry of Jesus
March 25 The death and resurrection of Jesus
April 1 The Holy Spirit
April 22 Becoming a Christian
How Christians grow
April 29 Learning to pray
May 6 Reading the Bible
May 13 Belonging to the Church
May 20 Sharing Holy Communion

May 27 Living God's way
June 3 Serving the Lord
June 10 Your money and your life
June 17 Learning to love

All sessions will be at St Johns, and last from 1½ -2 hrs. Each part of the programme is timed, and there's a handout sheet for each session. For e.g. Session 1 programme consists of:
Introduction: Welcome, prayer and opening exercise 15 mins
Testimony: The leader's story 5
Introduction and ground rules 5
Buzz groups 10
Is God really there? 10
Buzz groups 5
'I believe in God' 15
Buzz groups for questions 10
Question time 10
Knowing God and closing prayer 5
As you can see, the sessions are part sharing, part teaching and part inter-active. If you know of folk who you think may be interested (even if they may not want to be confirmed), let me know.
Christenings. Advance notice that Aimee Robinson will be christened on March 1st, during our 10.30 service. There will also be another family - Aaron Finney, Alice Marshall, with their children Jake, Kenzie & Amelia - and I will be christening Amelia (born within a few days of Aimee). Hot Gospel Choir have also been asked to take part in this service, for which we are expecting a full Church. Do ask your friends! Buffet lunch to follow.
Many thanks to those of you who offered to help with the children. Ann will work on a programme, and get back to you.
Baptisms. Photos of the baptisms on January 4th @ back of Church. If you write your name on the back of any you'd like, I'll try and get copies.
Nick Carter was successful in his interview, and stayed on the Isle of Man to start work. He is having his things sent on, so we may not see him for a while. He sounded OK when I spoke to him. Hopefully, we'll keep up to date via Bethany & Karl.
DCC meeting - Monday Feb 1st @ 7p.m. at St John's.
Next Sunday. Morning Worship 10.30 a.m. followed by buffet lunch & LIFE training/event.

St John's Notice Sheet 11/1/09
Birthdays. I'm taking Monday off this week to coincide with mine. Ann's is on Saturday 24th of this month.
Wednesday. Holy Communion at 9.30, followed by cup of coffee and Bible study from 11am for any/all who you can manage it. Growth Group re-starts from 8pm at The Vicarage.
Litter pick on Friday (16th) from 8.30 a.m. outside Billy & Lorna's (500 Southcoates Lane). We go onto Rosmead Park, up the cycle track and end up at Burma Drive Recycling Plant. Do join us, and bring a bin if you can.
Newsletter. Copies of our latest newsletter at the back of Church. Do take a copy if you haven't already.
Thank you! I received this note from Jo just before Christmas, written to St Johns Church. 'Thank you very much for your prayers and thoughts through my pregnancy and prayers afterwards. They meant a lot to me and Antoine. Everyone has been great in offering your support with Aimee. We are so pleased to belong to such a supportive Church, and we are glad to be a part of St. John's Church. Thank you for the lovely gifts people have sent. We are overwhelmed with them all, and with so many lovely things. God has blessed us with a lovely daughter, and we are so grateful. Thank you.'
East Hull Churches Together United Service for the start of Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is at 6.30pm on Sunday 18th January, at Kingston Wesley, Holderness Rd. Preacher is William Mather. Theme: "Reconciliation" with a Korean influence. All welcome.
John Saunderson's brother, Philip, passed away on Wednesday after a year living with cancer. John would like to thank all those who have prayed for Philip and the family.
Hope08. Final celebration Saturday 24th January. Worship, thanksgiving and plans for 2009/10, speaker: Revd. Alison Gilchrist, New Life Centre, Bridlington Ave. Time 7.30 p.m. All welcome.
Organ. Work is due to start on Jan 27th on our organ which suffered during the building work. As I understand it (but Steve can explain it better), the plastic sheeting which was meant to protect the organ was inadequate, which in turn resulted in dust, dirt and damage to the working mechanism. Graham Smales who will do the work says that he will try to ensure that at least some of the organ is playable during the repairs and pipe cleaning etc. The organ will only be fully available once the roof has been done.
Next Sunday - Morning Worship (10.30 am).

Champion's Challenge (August 19-23). We are very sorry, but our Champion's Challenge Holiday club has had to be cancelled as Bruce & Christine Paterson are no longer able to come. Their daughter has given birth to a baby who is seriously ill, and they feel they must stay with her instead.

The time commitment is approx 2-4 pm, and the first Saturday is Saturday week (23rd). The burger man is not expected to be there this season, so the Committee are looking to us instead. Let's not disappoint them.
Parish magazines at the back of Church - help yourself.
Hot Gospel Choir. Advance notice that there will be a Hot Gospel Choir event on Saturday October 11th (7.30-9 pm). It should be a good occasion, and an opportunity to invite friends who don't normally come to St John's.
