Christening. There will also be a christening today at 12.30 pm of Travis Robinson, from Estcourt Street. His mum & dad will be getting married here at St John's on December 27th.
Champion's Challenge (August 19-23). We are very sorry, but our Champion's Challenge Holiday club has had to be cancelled as Bruce & Christine Paterson are no longer able to come. Their daughter has given birth to a baby who is seriously ill, and they feel they must stay with her instead.

Growth Group. Why not come along to our Growth Group at Antoine & Jo's on Wednesday? Address: 140 Summergangs, starting at 8 pm. You'd be v. welcome.
Path. As you can see, almost all of the work has now been done on extending our Church path. A big improvement.
Day off. In case you didn't know, my day off has been Friday until now. I believe it's right to switch to Saturdays in future though to be able to spend more time with Ann & Ruth.
Rugby club teas. We do need help to put on teas for the E. Hull Rugby supporters on ten Saturdays until the end of the year. The time commitment is approx 2-4 pm, and the first Saturday is Saturday week (23rd). The burger man is not expected to be there this season, so the Committee are looking to us instead. Let's not disappoint them.
Parish magazines at the back of Church - help yourself.
Hot Gospel Choir. Advance notice that there will be a Hot Gospel Choir event on Saturday October 11th (7.30-9 pm). It should be a good occasion, and an opportunity to invite friends who don't normally come to St John's.
Back to Church Sunday/Alpha. A reminder that this is on September 28th, and coincides with the start of our Alpha Course. This is a 10 week introductory course to Christian faith, and is for anyone. It starts on Sept 28th at St. John's with a buffet lunch from 12.30. Sessions are on DVD, and we finish by 3pm. There will be a crèche facility. Notices – week beginning 13/07/08
Welcome back to Alisha Wilkinson after about 3 months of being tied up almost continuously with course work for her training in sociology. Also to Tom Hill, a long-standing member of St John’s, following the funeral service of his wife, Doreen, on Thursday.
Newsletter. I hope you enjoy reading our first newsletter which will go out for general circulation later this month. This is a new initiative to try and get the work of St John’s more widely known in the area. Do let me have your comments.
Healing ministry won’t be available this Sunday because of the tight turnaround between services today. However, next Sunday we’ll be back to ‘normal’, when Jason will be leading and preaching in my absence.
Growth Group will be at Jo & Antoine’s as usual on Wednesday @ 7.30 p.m. Do come if you can. It would be good to see more folk supporting this. Bible study this week - Nehemiah 8.
Ann is still away at her mother’s until Tuesday. Ruthie and I are surviving, but it’ll be v. good to see her back! Ann’s mother’s doing fine following her hip operation.
Back to Church Sunday is September 28th when we are encouraged to bring at least one other person to Church who may have lapsed or not had any previous interest. Do think and pray about this now (it’s not too soon). Our hope is that many of these folk will also be willing to stay on for a buffet lunch, and to attend the first session of our Alpha course. If you’ve not done Alpha yourself, this is a good opportunity to do so. More details to follow.
Breakfast Club+. Do stay on for Breakfast Club+ today if you can. The theme is Martha & Mary, and we’re grateful to Andy Creamer for joining us once again to help out.
Local walks. Today - Lunch (£5.25) and 2 – 3 mile walk at Burton Pidsea. Let Norman Pacey know if you are going (07749 485427). Monday 21st July. Very short walk at Paull and pub supper. Meet at 6:30pm at St Columba. Let Lorelli know if you are coming (323840).
Zimbabwe. Do continue to remember Nomsa and her family in your prayers. The situation is if anything worse than ever, with the international community seemingly unable (or unwilling) to come up with a solution to the political problem caused by the recent elections. A reminder that if you are praying by name for Nomsa’s family, they are Libone, Liqonde, Sanele and Khanyi, and her mother is Simipi. Remember too that the appeal to give freewill support to Nomsa is still open with yellow envelopes at the back of Church. Please give if you haven’t yet done so, or if you think you can give more. Envelopes put into the collection will mean we can give Nomsa the gift aid money on top if you are a taxpayer. NB. Nomsa’s birthday is on the 21st (Monday week).
Morning Worship. Another reminder that this month, we are experimenting with a new style Morning Worship service, which will include a short act of Holy Communion and healing ministry with anointing with oil. In order to trial this service, and prior to discussion at DCC, both next Sunday (20th) and Sunday week (27th), this will be the 10.30 a.m. service. This means that there will be no Holy Communion (9.30) & no All Age Worship (10.30) on 4th Sunday. Do let me have your comments.
Project Phase 2 is going well (as you can see). They’re hoping to finish early – say in a couple of weeks.
Next Sunday will be Morning Worship (10.30), led by Rev. Jason Taylor from Victoria Dock Church.
Saturday, 5 July 2008
Notices week beginning 6 July 2008
Healing ministry starts today with anointing with oil. As the rails have been removed from in front of the main altar to give more space, this ministry & Holy Communion will both be in the ladychapel. Some personal conclusion on Healing Ministry are for you to take home & read.
Happy birthday to Sanele Donga, who is 18 on Wednesday, and Nomsa's third son.
Funeral service of Doreen Hill will take place at St John's on Thursday (10th) at 12 noon. Tom will accompany Doreen to Chanterlands Crematorium at the end. Refreshments at The Reindeer for those who can stay on.

Next Sunday. Holy Communion (9.30), Breakfast Club+ (10.30) NB. Ann is away next Sunday

Enneagram Day. The second of our two Enneagram Days will be on Friday (27th) 10-4 pm. It should be a great day, and very informative (as was the last one). If you know nothing about Enneagram, it’s probably best to wait until the next opportunity – probably early October. Flyers on the table at the back.
Newsletter. I am committing to a newsletter in July for distribution in SWW (Southcoates West Ward), and would appreciate an article from YOU - please! Up to 200 words would be fine. This was discussed last year, but never happened. I’m thinking it’ll be two sides of A4 to reduce photocopying costs. PCC meeting on Monday (7.30pm) at St John’s.
Next Sunday Morning Worship service (10.30).

True Colours. Sadly, this project will be coming to an end on Monday June 30th, when there will be a final show (6.30-8 pm) put on by the children, and to which we’re all invited. There are forms at the back of Church. Do complete, and leave on the table for Anne & Chris to collect.

Churchwardens. Each year our Churchwardens are required to make certain statements of commitment in the presence of the Archdeacon. Sharon has already done hers. Steve will today (but without the Archdeacon). We’re grateful to both for all they do.
Next Sunday Ann & I are away, but Nick Whetton the prison chaplain will be with you instead. The services will be as usual – Holy Communion (9.30), All Age Worship (10.30). Happy birthday for that day to Karl Carter, who will be 9.

Sat 7th June Wildlife Walk around Spurn Point. Moderate length and flat. Bring packed lunch. Meet at St Columba’s at 9am
St John’s story. Antoine has brought sound equipment to Church today so he can begin to record the St John’s story. We’re looking for say a couple of people to make a start with this today – an opportunity for you to tell what St John’s means to you.
Cleaning the Church. A reminder that the next date for Church cleaning is Saturday 7th June (9.30 a.m.-12).
Antoine is playing at the Reindeer again – on Sunday 8th June (8.30-11). Let’s see if we can support him for at least some of the evening. It was great last time.
Growth Group. Those of us who go to this would be really encouraged if others made this a priority in their week. Everyone is under pressure, and of course it’s an effort, but it’s definitely an effort worth making, as well as being an opportunity to get to know each other better, and grow spiritually (c.f. Hebrews 10:25). If anyone needs a lift, let me know. Next meeting: Wednesday @ 7.30. Venue: Jo & Antoine’s – 140 Summergangs.
Nomsa. As you know, Nomsa has been separated from her family for more than 5 years now, and is feeling their pain very much in the increasingly desperate situation in Zimbabwe. I have been concerned that as a Church, there must be something we can do, and we can. As well as putting money in ‘Nomsa appeal’ envelopes (see notice last week), members of DCC have taken the decision that Nomsa also should have the MaMaD Lent collections which anyway were going to alleviate poverty in Zimbabwe, and this year amounted to £411.75.
Next Sunday. Holy Communion (9.30), Breakfast Club+ (10.30).
Sunday, 25 May 2008
Notices – week beginning 25/05/08
Confirmation. As you know already Bethany Carter is being confirmed next Sunday at St Michael’s, Marfleet Lane at 6.30 p.m. At the same time, Nick is also going to be re-confirmed! I didn’t know until last week that this was even possible, but apparently it is, so please do come and support both Nick & Bethany next Sunday evening, on what will be a great occasion for the Carter family.
Correction. Having now spoken to Nick Whetton, he’s happy to do 4th Sunday next month as 4th Sunday i.e. with no change to our normal service pattern. This means that Nick will lead Holy Communion and All Age Worship on the 4th Sunday (22nd), and I will be leading Morning Worship on the 5th Sunday. For those who don’t know him, Nick is Senior Chaplain at Hull Prison.
Artwork. The exhibition of artwork is by Escourt Primary School Year 5, and on the subject of re-cycling. There will be another exhibition at the end of term, presented by another year group, under the direction of Doug Smelt. Also, an exhibition by True Colours at the end of June.
St John’s story. At our recent DCC, we agreed we’d tell our version of the St John’s story, and invite others to do the same. The idea is that we hand-write it (say two sides of A4), maybe add a photo or two, and have it all ready in scrap book format by the next DCC (July 28). Antoine is also happy to record your story, and to bring suitable sound equipment with him to Church. We’ve got a great story to tell, and one which others would be really interested to know about. At the same time, it may not be easy to get started, so Steve, Sharon and I are aiming to get ours done by mid June. Let’s do it!

Nomsa. As you know, Nomsa has been separated from her family for more than 5 years now, and is feeling their pain very much in the increasingly desperate situation in Zimbabwe. I have been concerned that as a Church, there must be something we can do, and we can. Nomsa has four children Libone & Liqonde (twins - both 19), Sanele (18) and the only girl Khanyi (11). I understand that now the only way her children and her mother, Simipi, can survive is by one or more of them going into Botswana to collect food from an uncle, financed by Nomsa herself. Having thought and prayed about this, I believe that our Christian response should be for us as a Church to help Nomsa to continue to support her family. This is an open appeal alongside our normal giving, and will be kept under review. Simply put your offering into an envelope marked ‘Nomsa appeal’, and we will ensure she gets the money as soon as possible. Remember that if you are a tax-payer, we can also recover gift aid.
Phase 2. We had a meeting with Jonathan (architect) and Halls to discuss Phase 2 i.e. the present grass & bramble patch (south side). Various suggestions were made to get Jonathan’s plan within budget, and he has now produced a revised scheme. Once we’re all agreed, I was told it’ll take Halls 3 weeks to get a team together, and 3 weeks to get the work done. End of July looks realistic. Then on to Phase 3!
Next Sunday. Service Holy Communion (10.30).

Notices – week beginning 18/05/08
Services in June. There’s going to be a change in our service pattern in June, as Ann, Ruthie & I need to be away at a family 60th birthday party in Surrey on June 22nd (4th Sunday). The idea is to swap 4th & 5th Sundays in June so that Morning Worship is on the 4th Sunday and Holy Communion/All Age Worship on the 5th Sunday (29th). Although I haven’t managed to speak to him about it yet, I understand that Nick Whetton (Prison Chaplain) can lead and preach at Morning Worship on 22nd.
Banns of marriage today, for 3rd time of asking.

DCC. Darren, Antoine & Nick were welcomed on as newly appointed members. Also, the following officers were appointed: vice-chair (Steve), covenant secretary (Steve), DCC secretary (Sharon), Electoral roll officer (Wiggy). Also Standing Committee – ex-officio +Wiggy & Nick. However, the post of treasurer is currently vacant.
Cross. The discussion we had at DCC can be summarized as follows. We decided to dispense with the non-uniform cross-piece (as originally proposed), keep the wider of the two vertical shafts as is, cut the other vertical shaft to a size suitable to form the new cross-piece, embed the cross-piece into the vertical to ensure uniformity and lightly clean throughout. We’re now waiting to hear back from Halls re a price. The result should look really good.

Mission Shaped Intro: Four weeks to rediscover mission and re-imagine church.
New world, new church? Our world and our lives have changed radically in the last twenty years, but has the church adapted to this change? Do we need a changed church for a changing world? Are new forms of church really possible? If so, how can they be developed? The aim of this course is to explore the ‘why’ of creating fresh expressions of church rather than the ‘how’. The four week course takes us on a journey looking at the ever-changing nature of our social communities and why the church needs to rethink its approach to those communities in meaningful and relevant ways. The course is designed to present those changes in an informative and interactive way, and is suitable for both clergy and lay alike. The ninety minute sessions are delivered through verbal presentation, powerpoints, movie clips and stories with group participation. While it is designed to help groups to consider the ‘mixed economy’ approach to mission, it is also an ideal course for congregations and groups. It also provides a link from vision days for those who wish to discover more and for those who wish to go further through the mission-shaped ministry course. Matthew Brailsford
Course details: Venue: St Nicholas’ Parish Hall, Pickering Road Hull HU4 6SA Time: Wednesday Evenings 8.00-9.30pm 11th, 18th, 25th, June & 2nd July. More info needed? Contact: Matthew Brailsford (631306) or by e/m Matthew.brailsford@ukgateway.net

I’m happy for that to happen, and it will be on Sunday June 1st at St Michaels, Marfleet Lane (just off Holderness Road). Time 6.30 p.m. Do come and support her. Zimbabwe. Today has been designated a special day of prayer for the situation in Zimbabwe. Below see first ‘the appeal’ from Bob Stumbles – Chancellor (Anglican Diocese of Harare), followed by ++Sentamu’s response. Please make a point of specially supporting Nomsa and her family today in your prayers, as well as others caught up in this dire situation.
A desperate cry from the hearts of Zimbabwe screams across the world. It calls upon all Christians of every denomination in every nation to focus their prayers, in churches, halls, homes or elsewhere, on Sunday 27th April, 2008 on the critical situation in Zimbabwe, a nation in dire distress and teetering on the brink of human disaster. Let the cry for help touch your heart and mind. Let it move you to do what you can immediately to ensure this Day of Prayer takes place in your country and neighbourhood.
Please pass on this message right now to all the churches and Christian organisations known to you and to the media as well as to everyone anxious to rescue Zimbabwe from violence, the concealing and juggling of election results, deceit, oppression and corruption, and to bring about righteousness, joy, peace, compassion, honesty, justice, democracy and freedom from fear and want. May a continual strong stream of prayer and supplication flow up to the Lord on behalf of all the people on this Day of Prayer, exhorting His divine intervention throughout the nation. "It is by making the truth publicly known that we recommend ourselves to the honest judgment of mankind in the sight of God." (2 Corinthians 4:2)
Some advice to Zimbabweans: "Who so putteth his trust in the Lord shall be safe." (Proverbs 29:25) "Stand fast, and do not let yourselves be caught again in the yoke of slavery." (Galatians 5:1) "Make no mistake, you cannot cheat God." (Galatians 6:7) "Do not be overcome by evil but overcame evil with good" (Romans 12:21) Bob Stumbles, Chancellor - The Anglican Diocese of Harare
Archbishop calls for public to join him for day of fasting and prayer in York Minster for Zimbabwe. This Sunday (April 27 2008) the Archbishop of York will spend a day of fasting and prayer in York Minster in support of the people of Zimbabwe. Dr John Sentamu is calling on the public to join him at the cathedral for the vigil and light a candle to stand in solidarity with the suffering people of Zimbabwe. The Archbishop's action follows his joint statement released yesterday with the Archbishop of Canterbury, calling for "a civil society movement that both gives voice to those who demand an end to the mayhem that grows out of injustice, poverty, exclusion and violence". Dr Sentamu said: "I want as many people as possible to join me at the Minster to pray for the situation in Zimbabwe and light a candle as a public demonstration of support for the people there. As a Christian community we must all stand together with our brothers and sisters living under the tyranny Mugabe and pray that they will find deliverance." Dr Sentamu will begin his prayer vigil at 8.00am in York Minster until the end of evensong at 4.30pm and will lead prayers on the hour every hour.

St John’s Annual Report for the year 2007
2007 was a challenging year for all of us at St John’s. From early January onwards, there was a steady build-up (and much sorting out) before we finally left the building to Jonathan Hobson and Halls for the Project to get underway. Right from the start it was a real team effort, with Brian Webster (Halls site manager) doing an excellent job of co-ordinating the work ‘on the ground’ and John Hallaway (Project Manager) doing an equally remarkable job of both fund-raising and managing the finances as well as the Project itself. As a result, not only was the work completed on time, but also, after a number of variations along the way, some £200 within budget. All in all a remarkable achievement!

Notices – week beginning 16/03/08
Layout. Today, and following on from our DCC meeting last week, I will be celebrating Holy Communion from the chancel step, and you are invited to receive standing, rather than kneeling at the rail. As usual, if you are either too young to receive or do not wish to, you are welcome to come forward for prayer instead. Alternatively, you may prefer to remain seated. As mentioned last Sunday, this arrangement resolves the problem of distance between the Communion table and congregation.
Easter services. These will be as follows:
*Maundy Thursday. Service of Holy Communion at 7.30 p.m. Preacher: Jason Taylor (Victoria Dock)
*Good Friday. Churches Together in East Hull service at 7.30 p.m. This will be a service of quiet reflection, following the themes ‘Into the tomb’, ‘Life in the darkness’, ‘Glimmers of hope’ and ‘Voluntary self-sacrifice’. This will be the only Good Friday service at St John’s. In the morning, you are encouraged to attend a 10.30 Service at Holderness Rd Methodist, followed by march of witness to St Columba; and/or in the afternoon between 2-3pm a Meditation on the Cross at St Columba.
*Easter Sunday. Holy Communion 10.30 a.m. This will be the only Easter service at St John’s. Also, in the evening (7 p.m.) however there will be Easter Praise at the City Hall. Tickets available through Bible Outlet, 67 Wright Street or phone the ticket hotline and leave your message (07504239644). Hot Gospel will be there, and hopefully some of us as well. See you there?
All Age Worship. Because there will be no All Age Worship next Sunday because of Easter, it will be on Sunday week instead (30th), which is possible because of there being 5 Sundays in March. I’m hoping that Elkana will preach (haven’t asked him yet!).

This is the roll of our Church members which is updated annually before the Annual Meeting, which this year is on April 20th @ St Columba 6.30 p.m. Wiggy is our ER officer – see her for more info. It’s a big ask, and they need our prayers, support and encouragement. On the other hand, there’s no shortage of children – about 20 last Monday, and the Project has only just started!

On Friday 15 Fenruary 2008, we had the privilege of welcoming John Prescott MP back to St John’s, together with the European Commissioner for Regional Policy (Danuta Hubner) from Poland. Our Hot Gospel Choir gave another outstanding performance, which literally stopped JP & DH in their tracks as they were about to leave!
Youth. Some of you may know that we have received funding from Community Initiative until the end of June to fund a youth project. Whilst the timing has been tight, PTL we now have three part-time youth workers in place, Chris & Anne Clarke (St. Aidan’s) and Julia Clapp (Vineyard). They have a variety of talents between them, and have the vision of working with 20-30 children in the area between the ages of 8-13 to put on a show at the beginning of July. They hope to develop singing, music, dance and other skills during that time, and plan to meet early Sunday afternoon and one evening a week, as well as getting involved in local schools. The funding is already in place, and the first workshop is planned for Sunday week (March 2).
Art. Doug Smelt is our ‘resident’ artist, and son of Brian Smelt (Chair of Chairs of the Pact Boards). He is planning to increase interest in the arts via art workshops in Church for school groups, and a series of exhibitions. The current paintings are coming down, but watch this space!

WOW FACTOR'S AT CENTRE OF THINGS

Community groups in east Hull will have a new home from today after £660,000 was spent on refurbishing a rundown church. Hull East MP John Prescott reopened St John the Evangelist Church in Rosmead Street, east Hull. Mr Prescott said: "When you contrast what this church must have been like before they did the work with how it is today, it really has the 'wow' factor. You walk in through the door and say 'wow'. It's warm, lovely and welcoming. We've got something going here." Mr Prescott, who was at the opening with his wife Pauline, said he hopes the building will benefit people in the community. He said: "I am pleased to be involved in this project. It's a building that will bring people together."
Reverend Chris Grundy is both the vicar of the church and also the chairman of St John's Drypool community project. He said: "I'm absolutely delighted with it. It's a real encouragement and I believe it will demonstrate to the people in this area that a facility of real merit is going to be available to them here. I look forward to it being used. St John's is now a church and a community centre, or a community centre and a church. I hope it helps change people's perceptions of the place. People thought it was a church that is closed. Now I want them to take ownership of this building and reclaim it as a space for themselves."
Money for the development of the old building came from sources including the European Union's regional development fund, Preston Road Neighbourhood Development Company and regeneration project Gateway Pathfinder. Funding also came from Hull City Council's community initiative budget, and £15,000 of donations from people living in the area.
Councillor Steve Brady, leader of the Labour group on Hull City Council, and a councillor for the ward, said: "This church will be part of the regeneration of this area. Together, we are going to change this area now and get it back to an area that people want to live in. This is a tremendously exciting time."
Peter Crook, community liaison manager for the project, is hoping to hear from groups throughout the community who will be able to make use of the new facility. The church now includes several meeting rooms and cafe space all nestled in the body of the Church of England building. Mr Crook said: "On December 16, the Bishop of Hull, Richard Frith, held a lovely service to rededicate the church. Since then, the floodgates have opened with people wanting to use the new facilities. The local residents' association will want to use the space available here and we have been contacted by schools and sports groups. Since the builders left we have been getting calls from a wide range of groups."
